The 19 years of the Rede Agroecológica do Maranhão: contributions and challenges

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to analyze RAMA historically and present contributions in the
current political scenario of Agroecology. In October 2017, the Agroecological Network of Maranhão
(RAMA) will complete 19 years of activity as a political movement and social practice
in favor of Agroecology. Since its creation, RAMA has organized several spaces for dissemination
and sharing of agroecological practices and knowledge, contributing to the construction
and strengthening of knowledge in the State of Maranhão. RAMA is composed of farmers’
organizations committed to the principles of Agroecology, by teaching, research and extension
institutions and non-governmental organizations in the field of Agroecology. Recently, given
the geographic dimensions of the state, the different ecosystems and realities of traditional
peoples and communities, the creation of regional centers has been encouraged, guaranteeing
the local representativeness and ensuring the recognition of social and environmental
specificities in the State.
