Assessment of the Potential of Agroecological Production in District Forte de Coimbra

Abstract

The district of Forte de Coimbra-MS, located in the Pantanal do Nabileque, faces several challenges to its development, including the lack of employment and food insecurity. This social framework motivates the search for sustainable production alternatives, based on agroecology, in order to guarantee the supply of healthy food and income generation. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate the potential for the development of agroecology in the district of Forte de Coimbra. To this end, a set of indicators was used, distributed into four descriptive categories (socioeconomic, environmental, infrastructure and production) applied to the analysis of three agricultural cultivation areas existing in the locality.  These indicators made it possible to measure the district's degree of sustainability in agroecological production by category. As a result, it was possible to verify the high potential of environmental and production factors indicated as favorable to the development of agroecology, to the detriment of the low socioeconomic indicators that need to be prioritized so that agroecological production can be identified as an alternative to sustainable development in the locality.
