Subsidies for public policies to support the adoption of biodiverse agroforestry systems by family farming in Brazil

Technical-scientific studies carried out over the last two decades in Mato Grosso do Sul State, in the western region of São Paulo and northwest of Paraná, visits to the experiences of reference farmers in the five regions of Brazil, as well as consultations with national and international publications involving systems biodiverse agroforestry (SAFs) made it possible to make the following recommendations aimed at supporting the design and/or improvement of public policies and structured actions for the broad adoption of SAFs: 1) Strengthening diversified production, short production circuits commercialization and local development; 2) Training processes in SAFs; 3) Strengthening public research and technology transfer; 4) Qualified technical assistance in an amount appropriate to farmers’ needs; 5) Credit consistent with SAFs, unbureaucratized and flexible; 6) Recognition and payments for environmental and socioeconomic services; 7) Improving legislation for the management and harvesting of trees planted in these systems; 8) Machines and equipment to optimize work in SAFs; 9) Strengthening the consumption of products from SAfs; and 10) Adjustments to current processes involving public policies.
