Abstract

Areas of permanent preservation along degraded or altered water courses in small rural properties
may have their vegetation restored by combining food production and economic returns
with non-timber products. The present work aimed to select native forest species of ciliary
forest, from the region of the middle valley of the Paraíba of Sul River, and to evaluate its initial
development, in an agroforestry system for restoration of ciliary forest. In this context, a model
of an agroforestry system was implemented with forest species in lines of filling and diversity,
associated in the lines with yams (Colocasia esculenta). All species show good adaptation and
survival, with the exception of Euterpe edulis (37.5%).
