Abstract

The report gives the experience on the process that culminated in a low cost irrigation system.
The teams involved were from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) and
the Company for Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Emater/RJ). A farmer family from
Barra do Piraí/RJ was selected and the field work was carried out from 2011 to 2012. It was verified
that the low cost system, easy access and simple implantation assure the success of the
experience. The complexity of the edaphoclimatic and hydraulic studies was hardship for the
implantation of irrigation systems. Importance was reported to begin from real field problems
experienced by the farmers in order to identify solution through a productive system. The implementation
of the irrigation system had an impact on the adequate supply of water to crops
and on the availability of working hours for agricultural management.
