Abstract

Current social and environmental damage resulting from conventional agriculture implies a
need for the development of a more just and viable agriculture, in order to enable farmer to
carry out a sustainable management of agricultural systems. In this regard, this study aims to
comprehend the perception of family farmers concerning sustainable agriculture transition in
Chapecó, SC. Therefore, interviews were conducted with six farmers who conducted and are
conducting agroecological transition. As a result, respondents emphasized not using chemical
inputs led to a wide range of benefits. Another important aspect highlighted by the interviewees
refers to the need for subsidies to enable effective conversion the production system. Therefore,
social and environmental benefits related to the adoption of sustainable agricultural practicesmust
be accentuated, as well as the need to implement subsidies that enable the farmer to
carry out agro-ecological transition.
