Participatory soil quality evaluation in a No-Tillage Vegetable System
Keywords:

Soil quality (SQ) can be altered by management practices, and that depends on soil characteristics.
We report a training experience on participatory QS evaluation in No-Tillage Vegetable
System, in different regions of Santa Catarina state. Methods were adapted and applied in
order to train farmers, technical assistance and rural extension agents, and university students.
The focus was on the transition from conventional agriculture to agroecological systems.
We chose QS indicators that could be measured in the field, such as soil cover, organic
matter, compaction, and erosion. We also present an example of participatory SQ evaluation.
Projects funded by MDA/SAF/CNPq, MCTI/MAPA/MDA/MEC/MPA/CNPq, MDA/SAF/DATER
and MCTI/MAPA/MDA/MEC/MPA/CNPq, supported training of 260 people between 2009 and
2016. A practical handbook for participatory QS evaluation in No-Tillage Vegetable Systems
was edited and published.
