The indigenous people of Paiter Surui, after contact with non-indigenous society, underwent a
series of interventions in relation to the way of life, with emphasis on food. To reduce post-contact
caused problems, Gabgir Association, in 2014, requested assistance from the Department
of Forestry Engineering, the Universidade Federal de Rondônia (UNIR). This demand resulted
in the implementation of the Programa Agroflorestal Indígena in 2015 and 2016, which aimed
to promote the management of forest ecosystems and the conservation of socio-biodiversity,
in line with the food security of the Gapgir indigenous community. The food security curve,
construction of the nursery, production of seedlings, implementation of Agroforestry Systems
(SAF’s) and enrichment of crops, were the main results achieved by the project, executed. The
Programa Agroflorestal Indígena has contributed to the strengthening of agroecological knowledge
and the sovereignty and food security of the community.
