Tobacco cultivation entails environmental, social and health risks of those involved in its production.
Santa Catarina is the second largest tobacco producer in the country. Most of the
production is done by family farms, totally dependent on the production by the tobacco tax systems.
The core of research and extension in horticulture and sheep agroecology has emerged
as a structuring tool to propose agro-ecological production at detriment of the conventional
model adopted by farmers north of SC. Research in the area of agro-ecology enabled the
training of farmers, ATER technicians and students in the area of land, as well as in promoting
sustainable rural development in the region covered by the Project.
