Abstract

The agroecological transition is the process that characterizes the transition from a conventional
agricultural model to a sustainable model. Stephen Gliessman, defined four levels for
the agroecological transition, are: level 1 increase efficiency and effectiveness of conventional
practices to reduce / eliminate the use of pesticides; Level 2 substitute conventional inputs
and practices for alternatives; Level 3 redesign of the agroecosystem to prevent / mitigate
problems. Improved spatial and temporal design and management for self-regulation, closed
cycles, energy conversion cascades, mitigation of environmental extremes and diversification,
and level 4 (Re-) establish direct linkages between producers and consumers, considering the
interactions of the components of the system. The study for the agroecological transition of
the São Domingos Ranch estate is fully based on the Gliessman principles. Through them it is
intended to improve the property and quality of life of the owners.
