Abstract

The communication is organized in a historical perspective presenting two privileged ways of
weaving the trajectory of cocoa culture in Bahia. In the ambit of family agriculture, quilombola
and indigenous, the cacao of Cutting and burning agriculture created by the manioc in boqueirões,
in the margins of the rivers in agroflorestas of almost everything. In the ‘imaginary’ of the
regional elite, the cultivation of cacao in cabrucas, an ‘ecological’ system that, in the midst of
a monoculture slave system, met the needs of the Portuguese mercantile enterprise, exempt
from slave labor and capable of conserving and renewing the tropical forest.
