A study was carried out to introduce yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius Poep. & Endl.) in Serrana
Region of Espírito Santo State, Brazil, based on family farmers’s demand interested in their
medicinal attributes, for the diversification of high value-added crops in agro-systems and the
potential for use in the unconventional sugar industry. A partnership was made to: identify Brazilian
commercial producers, organize 45 farmers as a “pioneer productive group”, and adapt
production technologies, collective purchase of seedlings, technical follow-up, market opening,
and staggered crop organization.
