Alternative control of the fungus Pestalotia sp. “in vitro” with plant extracts

The genus Pestalotia is found causing leaf spot in several species, among them the coconut.
The objective of the present work was to evaluate the activity of plant extracts on the mycelial
growth of Pestalotia sp., “in vitro”. The extracts were incorporated into the BDA medium in a
proportion of 20%, being evaluated daily by means of mycelial growth (mm), mycelial growth
rate index (IVCM) and relative development percentage (PRD). Aqueous extracts of star anise
and clove totally inhibited the growth of Pestalotia sp. The smoke extract promoted the growth
of Pestalotia sp., Not being efficient in the “in vitro” control. The other treatments presented
mycelial growth, but they differed significantly from the control. Thus, aqueous extracts of star
anise, and clove may be used as an alternative in the control of Pestalotia sp. “in vitro”.
