The traditional formations within the walls of the university have long had deficiencies in the
formation of students, and the need to expand the search for knowledge in other spaces of
formation arises. This work aims to systematize the experience of members of the Umbuzeiro
Agroecology Group, students of the State University of Bahia (UNEB), in accompanying
activities of Technical Assistance and Extension Rural-ATER in five communities in the city
of Juazeiro assisted by the Regional Institute of Small Appropriate Agriculture-IRPAA. The
experience enabled students to gain a practical insight into the social, environmental, cultural
and economic issues of families living in the countryside. In this way it is evident that activities
like this are fundamental to breaking the barrier between field and city, strengthening relations
between students and the man and woman of the field, being possible the horizontal construction
of knowledge.
