Report of the implantation experience of a vertical garden in the Educational Center Zilda Arns in the city of Viçosa, MG

Among the advantages of setting up a vegetable garden in an educational institution, it is
possible to highlight the value of the environment, proposing changes over time with the strengthening
of environmental education and the importance of healthy food with products free of
pesticides. This work involved children from the Zilda Arns Educational Center in the municipality
of Viçosa was supported by volunteers in many of the activities carried out. It was possible
to work the children’s cognitive area, strengthening the learning of the school. The children
participated in all the stages of planting from the acquisition of materials to the harvest and
consumption of cultivated plants. It was possible at the end of the study to observe small changes
in the habits of all participants, children and collaborators, such as the reuse and reduction
of materials used, increase the general interest in growing plants at home and the market demand
for food free of pesticides, thus the system of agroecological cultivation.
