The role of traditional knowledge in the Costa Verde / RJ region for agroecological knowledge

The paper presents the discussion about the role of traditional communities’ knowledge in
building knowledge that supports the sustainable management of natural resources. In order
to do so, it takes up the theoretical conceptual debate about traditional communities, aiming
to identify to, characterize the relationships that this social category establishes with natural
resources, seeking to evaluate their contribution to sustainable management. The concept of
traditional communities was reviewed the light of the case study in the region of the Brazilian
Green Coast, located in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The discussions between the actors
who participated in the Forum of traditional communities in the region were the object of a
sociological analysis of a comprehensive nature. The analysis qualified the discussion and the
interactions between traditional communities and social actors and their potential for the strengthening
of their identities and the articulation in agroecological networks.
