Abstract

In contrast to the environmental damage caused by conventional agricultural production, several
experiments with Agro-forestry Agro-Ecological Systems (SAFAs) in southern Brazil have
been implemented through development projects. These experiences generated technical information
that in the last years has been valuing scientifically and developing methodologies
that allow the analysis to generate broader and generalizable conclusions. Therefore, the present
research aims to identify and characterize the causal relationships evidenced in these
projects that influence the multifunctionality of SAFAs. Secondary information was analyzed
using methodologies: evidence review and change theory, in addition to focus groups to complement
the results. From the analysis, it was verified that the processes of capacity building
and organizational strengthening are the main drivers of the multifunctionality of SAFAs.
