The advance of the urban zone over the rural environment has been a marked fact, occupying
previously forested areas. Therefore, the objective of this work is to evaluate the production of
seedlings of forest species, with ornamental potential, adapted to the Sergipano High Sertão
Region. The plant materials used were seeds of Mulungu (Erythrina velutina Willd.) and Juazeiro
(Ziziphus joazeiro Mart.). It were used: soil (control), cattle or sheep manure added to the
soil, in different proportions and in two types of containers (polystyrene tray with 128 cells and
110 cm3 tubes). At 40 days after planting, emergence (%), rooting (%), root length (cm), plant
height (cm), fresh shoot and root mass (mg) were evaluated. The data in percent were transformed
into sine arc of the square root of x / 100. All data were submitted to analysis of variance
with F test and, when significant, the means were compared by the Tukey test at the 5% level.
At the end, the best organic substrate type were determined as well as the best container for
seedling production of these two species. These results were used in the production of seedlings
for the afforestation of the city of Nossa Senhora da Glória / SE.
