Abstract

The present study describes the socioeconomic reality of the São Paulo Sustainable Development
Project (PDS), located in the Portal da Amazônia, in the municipality of Carlinda, state
of Mato Grosso. Interviews were conducted with beneficiaries of the agrarian reform in the
PDS, local leaderships and a technician from the Ouro Verde Institute (IOV), with strong local
performance. Among the 40 beneficiary families, the majority are migrants from the state of
Paraná (32.50%) and have incomplete elementary education (43.14%). More than half (55%)
do not have agricultural production in the property, with income from social security or sale
of labor outside the settlement. Many families (45%) produce various crops (mainly cashew,
guava, vegetables, manioc and passion fruit), while 30% are milk producers and 15% are beef
cattle farmers. The agroforestry system has contributed to the increase of income, with diversification
of production and comes is an alternative of viability of work and income generation,
besides promoting prospects for the permanence of the settlers in the PDS.
