Multifunctionality of peasant farming in periurban contexts: a case study from Western Mexico

Southeast of Guadalajara’s Metropolitan Area (AMG) -Mexico’s second most populated citythe
municipality of Tlajomulco is located, characterized by a large agricultural tradition. Nowadays,
urban expansion causes deep transformations in traditional structures. Participatory research
indicates family farming capable to resist urbanization. Moreover, the multifunctionality
of agriculture was assessed. Results illustrate the generation of multiple functions, such as:
provision of ecosystem services, strengthening the local economy, the construction of social
networks, and the maintaining of cultural identity. As such, multifunctional agriculture represents
local alternatives to urbanization.
