Abstract

With the increasing process of urbanization, urban agriculture emerges as a way to mitigate
the impacts on society, which suffers from food insecurity. The present report is about the
implementation and monitoring of a productive yard in the Juliano Moreira Colony in Jacarepaguá,
West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, an initiative of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), which
seeks to promote health through improved food and nutritional security in the community.
The selection of the participants, represented in this experience by a farmer, had the criterion
of the interest in practicing agroecology through the collective construction of knowledge. The
farmer was certified as Organic Producer, having her quality certified by Participatory System
linked to ABIO (Association of Organic Farmers of the State of Rio de Janeiro). The backyard
has contributed to food security and increased family income through the sale of surpluses, as
well as propagating the principles of agroecology in the community.
