Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture (UPA) can be understood as the processes of cultivation and
production of food in the cities and their surroundings. In this way, the objective of this work was
to understand, through a mapping of the urban community vegetables gardens of Petrolina, the
distribution and the socio-spatial occupation in the central and peripheral areas of the city. For
this, the data of spatial location of the urban vegetable garden of Petrolina - PE were collected,
through a GPS device and use of the ArcGis Software to make a map showing the distributions
of the urban vegetable gardens. The results point to a smaller number of vegetables gardens
concentrated in the center of the city and the majority being distributed in the peripheral areas.
Most of the urban vegetables gardens take place on public land with prominence in schools.
The most recent initiatives in UPA have been deployed on private land. It is concluded that
there is a need to value UPA experiences through actions to promote UPA in relation to its
relevance to food security, income generation and sustainable development of cities.
