Abstract

Based on principles of animal welfare, this paper aims to assess the preference of Japanese
ornamental fish by in differents environments that can be used as a parameter of well-being
for the creation of this species in aquariums. We used 96 Japanese ornamental fingerlings of
Carassius auratus and were performed four tests: the preference for different types of substrate,
different types of ornamental aquatic plants attached to the substrate, different types of
shelter, and different colors for the environment in its creation in aquariums. At the end, it was
concluded that this species has a greater preference for fine sand as substratum Valisneria like
plant, with no conclusive results on the preference for shelter and color.
