Vegetal Stratification of Home Gardens in Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil

This study aimed to carry out an ethnobotanical survey, and to evaluate the vegetal stratification of home gardens in a rural community of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil. For the ethnobotanical survey, 32 residents were interviewed. Then, the species were grouped according to habit. Forty seven species, distributed in 29 botanical families, were registered. The vegetal stratification according to plant habit was configured as follows: herbaceous (45%), arboreal (26%), shrub (23%) and vines (6%). The home gardens present expressive floristic diversity and structure similar to natural ecosystems. Most species have multiple uses, ensuring that the home gardens contribute on health, food security, and quality of life for the local people.
