Abstract

The use of pesticides is predominant in modern agriculture, however, the use requires knowledge
about the potential risks that the farmer is submitted. The objective was to identify the health
risks to farmers and the impacts caused to the environment due to the use of pesticides in
the community of Graciosa, José de Freitas/PI. Quiz were applied with 50 family heads. It was
observed that the majority of farmers have low education level, this factor has correlation with
the difficulties of reading the labels and understanding them; symptoms of intoxication have
been reported due to the indiscriminate use of pesticides and incorrect disposal of the packaging
causes environmental damage. It is necessary to promote greater awareness for these
small producers about the proper pesticides management, because only through rational use
it will reduce the damages caused to men and environment, favoring a better life quality.
