Organic vegetable garden at the regional lowland hospital in Santarém, Pará: A teaching tool for agroecological principles, the discourses of the agronomy course

This report is part of the experience of the supervised compulsory supervised internship at the
Regional Hospital of Baixo Amazonas, Dr. Waldemar Penna, in the period of August 2016 and
March 2017, with the objective of contributing to student training, using practices Agro-ecological,
with emphasis on the reuse of both organic waste and materials that would be discarded
by the hospital. Among the activities carried out are Composting, alternative seed treatment of
both fruit and vegetables, seedling production, seedlings transplantation, alternative pest control
and lawn management. The reuse of food waste, in a hospital environment, guarantees patients
and employees the opportunity to have a healthy and organic diet. The vegetable garden
has presented a significant increase of more than 50% of the use of organic waste, about 2t /
year are being used for organic composting. Fostering the reduction of environmental impacts,
and promoting the direct awareness of the hospital community.
