Collective urban vegetable garden in the city of Bologna – Italia

Activities were carried out in the period from March to July 2014 for the implementation of
urban gardens as elements of na ecological structure in the city of Bologna in Italy aiming to
overcome food insecurity, promote social inclusion and reduce environmental degradation in
peripheral zone of the city, where the poorest reside. The implementation and management of
urban gardens were made from the collective participation of students and professor from the
University of Bologna, volunteer sand city residentes who were organized into task forces to
carry out activities. Hanging gardens were developed (hydroponic) and a mandala garden.The
results show that it was possible to re-establish contact with nature, offering moments of conviviality
and personal satisfaction for employees, promoting agroecology through the production
of healthy foods and the inclusion of more vulnerable social groups.
