Abstract

Current Brazilian legislation doesn`t mention a minimal period to licensing renewal and we still
use pesticides banned in other countries. Considering that the country is the world’s largest
consumer, the present study investigated the registration status of pesticides active ingredients
(IA) registered in Brazil, in four international health authorities: Australia, Canada, the United
States and Europe. Our results showed that there are currently 70 IA of pesticides authorized
in Brazil that are prohibited by these 4 regulatory authorities. Of the 50 most traded pesticides
in Brazil, 27 are banned in at least one of these organs. This fact raises concerns not only with
the possible risks to human health and the environment from the use of these products.
