Pesticides` uses by agricultural producers in settlement areas of Piauí / Brazil

Abstract

The environmental contamination caused by the use of pesticides has raised concerns about
the inappropriate use of these compounds. The objective was to identify the use of pesticides
in the crops, as well to understand the return of packaging operation system by farmers in
settlement areas of Piauí. 72 producers were interviewed. It was found that in the settlement
areas, even with the collective coexistence project, there are many divergences of opinions
about pesticides, most of them use it even knowing the damages caused to the soil, as well
as the incorrect disposal. In the individual producers` case, the use is more intense because
they hire professionals to explain the effects of pesticides. Awareness-raising through the implementation
of strategies to mobilize governmental and non-governmental partnerships will
establish a greater commitment to the environment.
