Abstract

Water is the vital natural resource for any development process whether urban or rural. With
the worsening of climate change, water security has become a very important issue and being
widely discussed, both within the government and in organized civil society. In order to understand
the perception on this topic by agroecological family farmers, a participatory research
was carried out at the Dom Helder settlement, located in the municipality of Murici, in Zona da
Mata, in the Alagoas state. Important information was obtained on the difficulties faced and the
demands of the small family farmer on the governmental public policies in the administration of
the lack or the scarcity of water. The studied settlement has low water security, regarding the
preservation of its springs and water bodies, as well as it does not present significant indicators
on the efficiency of storage and water use.
