Abstract

The territory of the Xukuru do Ororubá indigenous people is located in the semi-arid region of the "agreste" of Pernambuco, in the municipalities of Pesqueira and Poção. It consists of 24 villages (aldeias) that occupy 27,555 hectares, distributed in 3 physiographic subregions. A group of farmers has carried out the preservation, conservation and multiplication of traditional seeds of the Xukuru, together with the ecologically based agricultural production initiative, in a movement to recreate indigenous ancestral agriculture. Throughout the year, the indigenous people hold two events to plan agricultural activities and to exchange seeds. These initiatives are aimed at increasing agrobiodiversity in the territory, as well as the strengthening indigenous identity and common goods expressed in Xukuru ancestral seeds.
