Despite the fact of northeast region of Brazil be a priority in studies related to desertification,
it´s known that other areas could be affected by this phenomenon as well. In this case, agroecology
presents itself as a new proposal to combat desertification by planning sustainable
agricultural systems, which guarantee food security, protection of natural resources and the
well-being of populations. This work aims to propose agroecological practices as an alternative
to mitigate and increase the socioecological resilience of farmers in areas susceptible to
desertification in the northern Rio de Janeiro state. From the secondary data collection, as
well as direct observation in the field, this study suggests the use of more efficient irrigation
systems, diversification of production, implementation of agroforestry systems, agroecological
management of soil fertility, among others
