Abstract

The rural youth and the creole/local seeds are still little explored since creole seeds are better
known and valued by older peasants. The theme was worked with 160 students from Pronera
(Efase/IF Baiano) from settlements and traditional communities of Background Pastures (“Fundo
de Pasto” communities) of the semi-arid region of Bahia (Brazil) in the “I Intercommunity Meeting
of Young Farmers” during three days at the “Escola Família Agricola do Sertão” (Efase) in
Monte Santo, Sisal Territory, Bahia, Brazil. Among this set of students there was a group of 60
students from the “Escola Família Agrícola do São Francisco”, located in Paratinga, BA. The
theme generated great interest and triggered the assembly of didactic units in theses schools,
in addition to school work in the “community time” period. Principles of Rural Education and
Agroecology were used for conducting the work in order to compose sustainable agroecosystems
whose initial basis is local seeds and the intergenerational contact in a dialogical way.
