Brazilian family farming has been marked by the growing disinterest of the young person in
staying in the rural environment. This has the consequence of breaking the guarantee of family
succession and the continuity of family farming. The relevance of this work is the need to
improve studies on rural youth, as the advance of agroecology in rural communities is often
dependent on the young. The objective of this study was to analyze the age range of the family
farmers and the family succession of the production units in the municipality of São Miguel do
Iguaçu / PR. Structured questionnaires were applied to thirty family production units. From the
data collected it was verified that 80% of the farmers are over 40 years old, 40% of them are
over 60 years old and 73% of the production units will not have family succession. The data
demonstrate the need for public policies aimed at rural youths remaining in rural areas.
