In the last decades, there had been searched and practiced by groups of farmers, located in various parts of the planet, a range of alternative methods of production and commercialization of healthy foods. It means that alternative production systems can support innovative strategies for rural development. On this background, the aim of this work is to report the experience of a compulsory curricular traineeship developed at a family farming site that produces not only certified organic foods but also that developed different marketing channels in a logic of horizontal integration. The study addressed the production activities, the observed agroforestry system and the multifunctionality observed. According to gained experience and literature review, the multifunctionality and the term 'Novo Rural', defined by Alentejano (2000), as a new social category presented in the countryside might contribute to the promotion of sustainable rural development based on solidarity.
