Abstract

The objective of this work was to characterize the enzymatic activity of urease in the soil in three systems (sage plantation, capoeira plow and capoeira after cutting and burning) in different degrees of succession, and to understand through this indicator the quality in the management of nutrient cycling ground. Samples were collected in the dry season in four municipalities in the state of Maranhão, totaling 11 areas. The activity of urease varied significantly between the ages studied in the systems of capoeira plow and sage plantation, being increasingly in agreement with each year. The maximum urease activity occurred in the area where Sabiá is planted, because in the soil under conventional tillage there is a more uniform distribution of organic matter and nutrients in the profile. The capoeira area showed no difference between the ages. The enzymatic activity was affected by age and type of system in the dry season.
