Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of M. caesalpiniifolia for carbon sequestration in different soil organic matter fractions at different stages of plant succession in Maranhão. Soil samples (0-10 cm depth) were collected in areas with savanna planting, capoeiras formed after cutting and burning (CCAP), and plowed and harvested capeiras (CARA) with different ages located in different municipalities of Maranhão during the period dry mass of 2017. The values of particulate organic carbon (COP) and total organic carbon (TOC) were determined. The total organic carbon in the sage and capoeira planting areas with cutting and burning remained constant along the area age advance, while the areas of capoeira plow showed a reduction in the carbon content of both fractions (COT and COP) with age of succession.
