Abstract

This work aims to present the use of different kinds of mulch available on a small farm to minimize the incidence of pests in chives cultivation and to reduce the consumption of water and manpower used by the family in crop management. Thus, the participatory research experience was carried out in partnership with UFMA, through the NEA Mearim with the Furtado family, who lives in the community Centro da Josina, municipality of São Luís Gonzaga - MA. In this sense, experiments were carried out that contained six kinds of mulching (pseudostem of banana, pseudostem of banana + wood ash, pseudostem of Banana + Indian Neem, Leaf of Sabiá, Leaf of Sabiá + wood ash, Leaf of sabiá + Neem Indian), and a control treatment with soil without mulching. With the application of these kinds of mulching, there was a significant decrease in the attack of the myrapode Embuá on the chive crop, with emphasis on the cover with pseudostem of banana, where it was observed the greater reduction of the attack of this myrapode in the chive culture.
