Abstract

The Communities that Sustain Agriculture emerged in the 1970s as an initiative of alternative sustainable social innovation to the chain of food production, distribution and consumption. The objective of this study was to characterize socio-economically and identify difficulties and potentialities of farmers with communities that sustain agriculture in APROSPERA. Semi-structured questionnaires were applied to thirteen farmers of the association. The results showed farmers low level of education, low participation of young people in productive activities, difficulties in the production and acquisition of agroecological seedlings, close farmer/co-farmer relationship, high collaboration in work between families, high knowledge, tools, machines and products exchange due the proximity of the properties and high amplitude of monthly gross income between families. Well managed models of Communities that Sustain Agriculture ensures agricultural sustainability, with a harmonious relationship between agriculture, environment and society.
