Abstract

Through a project by the “Education Nucleus” of the São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” students from the Biological Sciences and Agronomy Engineering courses of the Jaboticabal/SP campus developed environmental education activities with high school students and professors of the State School Prof. Antônio José Pedroso, also located in the municipality of Jaboticabal. One of the main activities of the project is to involve the participants in discussions about food production and consumption. In order to do so, workshops are organized on topics such as: soil formation and conservation, the importance of organic matter, composting, production systems and agroecology, the importance of water and different irrigation systems. A vegetable and medicinal herb garden was also started in a previously unused area. Students and teachers take turns in the care and maintenance of the garden.
