Abstract

Family Farming is a new category for Rural Development in Colombia; nevertheless, there are
not studies that have investigated the relationship with Agroecology. This article presents the
hypothesis that Agroecology is the most appropriate scientific and methodological approach
for the strengthening of Family Farming, contributing to the fulfillment of the peace agreements
in Colombia. To support it, the analysis of the potentialities of an organization of agricultural
families that use the agroecological approach to strengthen characteristics of their identity is
presented, promoting them to a greater incidence in aspects of national interest such as food
security and sovereignty, overcoming poverty and conservation of material and immaterial
goods of Colombian rurality. As a result, the study recommends the generation of differential
public policies for family farmers based on the agroecological approach.
