Evaluation of the perception of solid waste management from family farms in the Baeté and Bom Jardim settlements, Barreiros – PE

The disposal and management of solid waste represents a major challenge in cities and rural
family farms. The objective of this study was to verify the management and disposal of solid
waste produced by family farmers in the settlements Bom Jardim and Baeté, in Barreiros - PE.
A semi - structured interview was made up of 32 questions focusing on the environmental
aspects of properties and the disposal of solid waste. A documentary research was also used
along with the Solid Waste and Prefiture Law. Inadequate disposal of organic and inorganic
waste was found. In the Baeté settlement, 81.8% of the interviewees burn their domestic organic
waste, (4.5%) discard in the open and (13.6%) use conventional collection. In the Bom
Jardim settlement, it was observed that (90.0%) they burn their organic waste or dispose of it in
the open. The frequency of waste disposal in the areas also ranged from one day to two days.
