Challenges and possibilities for family farming based on the implementation of integrated and sustainable agroecological production units in traditional and rural communities of Angra dos Reis.

Angra dos Reis-RJ has suffered in the last decades an intense urbanization process affecting
strongly its family farming. Since the 1990s, however, it has received initiatives aimed at agroecology
in order to harmonize agricultural production with Atlantic forest areas. It has in its territory
an indigenous and a quilombola communities, and hundreds of familiar farmers. In recent
years, public procurement programs have strengthened rural organizations and stimulated traditional
banana, cassava and other crops. About nine months ago, a partnership between the
City of Angra dos Reis and SEBRAE to implement fifteen units of Integrated and Sustainable
Agroecological Production (PAIS) has been added to this process of strengthening, rescuing
the practice of the pull together and generating the first results of Production and marketing,
even on a small scale. However, it faces the challenges of adapting to more intensive production
and on a larger scale in an exclusively organic way.
