Abstract

In this proposal, the aim of this study was to analyze the importance of women farmers in the construction of agroecology as a strategy for family farming and for sustainable development. The Social Control Organization (SCO) groups involved in agroecological production in the region of Araraquara were identified and the roles played by women were highlighted, thus highlighting gender issues in rural work. Eight women farmers were interviewed in the mapped SCOs. The main results found in the research indicate the great difficulty women face in assuming leadership in social and family relationships, the social devaluation suffered and their accumulation of functions, the relationship of these women to the maintenance of backyards, food security, the transmission of culture and traditional knowledge, and the relationship between agroecology and agricultural practices carried out by women in their productive spaces.
