Abstract

The project Constitution of the Nucleus of Agroecology at Embrapa Maize and Sorghum (EMS)
is an action deriving from the National Policy on Agroecology and Organic Production. The
expansion of environmental perception was considered fundamental for the sensitization and
promotion of Agroecology in the EMS, which has a farm of almost 2,000 ha, with Cerrado
and Atlantic Forest. Many employees, performing routine tasks, are oblivious to the natural
riches in their immediate surroundings. The following actions were proposed and executed:
production and planting of seedlings of Cratylia argentea; Agroforestry system course; Seedlings
production course; Research on employee perception regarding the fruits of EMS; and
a campaign to promote the direct sale of community garden vegetables to EMS employees.
By becoming involved in the formulation and application of public policies in Agroecology and
organic production, the practice of agricultural research is re-signified and the historical social
function of Embrapa as an agent of change is reaffirmed.
