Mapping of agroecological experiences in Eastern Paraguay

Most of the agroecological initiatives in Paraguay are little known and scarcely enhanced and
made visible, a fact that motivated this research. The study characterizeds the geographic
distribution of experiences and agrobiodiversity, their organizational structure, linking networks
and compliance with the guidelines and plans established in public policies. The study was
non-experimental, cross-sectional and descriptive. The collection of data with semi-structured
interviews, by mail, direct observation and use of official documents. 58 agroecological experiences
were identified in 5 departments of the country that presents 53 species, mainly related
to non-governmental organizations. Caaguazú department is the most agrobiodiverse and
Cordillera shows the less agrobiodiversity. Central stands out in horticulture and San Pedro in
fruit trees. The weak implementation of the strategic guidelines established as a policy for the
promotion of agroecological production in particular is revealed.
