Abstract

Poverty is a timeless problem that needs to be debated. Studies on the factors about it can
foster discussions to overcome this problem. Rural poverty has specificities and needs
specific debates to meet the demands of the rural population. Thus, the programs to combat
rural poverty are inserted. One example is the São José Project (PSJ), created in 1996, to
finance projects that benefit participating families. The objective of this study is to analyze the
performance of the JSP in small rural communities, such as the Settlement Vida Nova
Aragão, located in Miraíma - CE. For the collection of data, semi-structured interviews with
the farmers were carried out, a time line was created for the settlement history and a
bibliographic review for theoretical basis. With the results obtained, we verified the
effectiveness of these investments and how long their benefits last, changing the perspective
of the settled families.
