Abstract

Aquaculture is the animal protein production sector that has the highest relative annual growth in the world, being responsible for the significant increase in the global supply of fish in response to the growing world demand. This strong growth has generated concerns about the socio-environmental impacts caused by conventional production methods that value monoculture and high commercial value species. There are few studies on aquaculture systems in the field of agroecology in Brazil. Such studies are fundamental for the expansion of the occupation of the territories by agroecological aquaculture systems. The present study expands the agroecological knowledge by addressing the occurrence and potential of the native fish species Gobionellus oceanicus (Pallas, 1770), popularly known as milongo, in estuarine aquaculture systems in the state of Sergipe, Brazil.
