Participatory experimentation is a useful way of producing science. This work has as objective to evaluate materials for soil cover and control of embuas in the cultivation of chives. The experiment was carried out in a family owned community in the center of Josina, municipality of São Luiz Gonzaga do Maranhão-MA. Six treatments were tested: Pseudostem of banana; Pseudostem of banana + Neem; Pseudostem of banana tree + ash; Sabia leaf; Leaf of Sabia + Neem; leaf of sabia + ash; and control treatment without any type of coverage. The treatments with the presence of pseudostem of banana and/or neem presented the best results related to productive variables, as well as greater maintenance of soil moisture and less damages due to the attack of embuas. The addition of ash in the treatments caused difficulties in chive growth. The banana pseudostem was shown to be a viable option for mulch in the cultivation of chives.
