Ornamental fish production: Income option to contribute to food sovereignty in peasant communities

Were analyzed the production of Betta fish (Betta splendens) in Perobas community at Patrocínio
do Muriaé-MG as a peasant knowledge. Were applied a semi-structured interview to 14
families of Betta fish farmers from the rural community of Perobas. The results were qualitatively
analyzed. Eleven (78.57%) interviewed indicated the beginning of the production after
observe an activity in other societies of the community. The production system was reworked
by the producers resulting on an own productive patterns. 50% of the farms have up to 3 hectares
(ha), three (21.43%) have 3.1 to 6 ha and four (28.57%) have 6.1 to 30 ha. In four families,
income from aquaculture production corresponds to 100% of family income, in seven (50.00%)
they represent between 70 and 90% of income in two (14.29%) 50% e for one (7.14% ) supplied
10% of income. The cultivation of Bettas in the community of Perobas can be investigated as
a peasant knowledge, as properties of production and production of Betta.
